Some link love

I am currently working on an Illidan and some Sylvanas Fan Art Profiles, I’d be very interested in hearing from anyone who is particularly keen on them as characters, but in the mean time here is some link love (or what I’ve been reading recently.)

Being a Woman who Raids – Kurn of Kurn’s Corner shares her experiences in raiding over the past 3 years. I don’t agree with all the conclusions reached, but she has a great many points to make from personal experience, and there are some very intelligent comments from Ophelie, Larisa and Cassandri. (I’ve also added this to the ‘Sexism relevant reading’ thread, apologies for the pingback spam, Kurn!

Righteous Orbs has three posts up that probably don’t need a link from me, but I want to share them anyway. First is What About The MENZ? by Chastity, which has a good deconstruction of the problems withe the player models available for men, and the nature of ‘manly’ in WoW, as well as a discussion of Rape Culture at the end. He follows it up with a rebuttal to some of the comments made in that post, and to another blogger who I’m not going to link to. Tamarind then has us all crying with laughter, because I think those of us invested in discussion about gender kind of needed a laugh.

Shadowscale of Pheshamanal also had a good run at the topic of Men & Gender in WoW, he is relatively new to the Elemental Blogging circle, but this one is worth a read (and more of a response than I’ve been able to give him.)

And talking of gender, this is an amazing post by Quinnae of The Nuclear Unicorn talking about roleplaying, gender, and experience, and the difference between abstract and experiential knowledge.

Zamir of Planet of the Hats has a retrospective on Ulduar up. It’s a long read, but it certainly makes me regret missing the first steps of my guild into that amazing space.

Arinn Dembo discusses Men in Games, from her perspective of Game Design. She also makes some excellent points in the comments, so please check those out as well.

The latest Stats from PlayOn show us some very exact figures of ‘hugs’ in game! As they say, this highlights the ability to study social behaviour as well as game mechanic stats. Vur interesting.

Disciplinary Action is making me smile, and this is a good thing. I just learned that Series 6 of Dr Who is going to be split in two next year, so smiles are good!

MissMedicina continues the gender discussion, and handles the comments in a fantastic way – we have some very interesting discussion going on over there.

WoW Philosophised talks about Azerothian Politics and the Illusion of Power. I can’t really summarise here, but he goes into how little control we have as players over the narrative arc of WoW.

    Thanks for the link and no worries about the comment, people get busy :) I would love to hear your thoughts though. The post you linked is strides above the first attempt I made a couple weeks ago

    Thanks for making these posts that link to people talking about this topic – if you hadn’t, I never would have found Shadowscale’s post, which is just wonderful!

    @Nonny – Bwhuahahahaha

    @Miss Medicina – No problem! I feel a bit bad not giving more content myself, but the volume of awesome posts on this topic is massive.

    Many happy returns for the linkage, MS! I’m glad I could put a smile on your face.

    D’awww… thank you so much for linking me. It’s enormously flattering that *the* Mental Shaman has called my work amazing. ;) I love this blog and admire the intellectual work you do. There is, it seems, so much that needs to be said over and over again, and so little energy to do it. I admire you for dropping Totem of Reason as often as you do and going to town on various gender issues in WoW, it matters, and its appreciated.

    Thank you also for writing up these linkspams, they always lead to interesting places. (Sorry this wasn’t a more thoughtful comment, I’m on the verge of passing out)

    @Quinnae – ‘Totems of Reason’ I love it xD Must come up with a new tag line around that. I think a lot of the praise has to go to blogs like Empowered Fire, Geek Feminism and The Border House for getting us thinking about these topics in a way beyond ‘I’m a gurl and I play WoW’.
